Kinesiotape – The Basics

By Karla Merola, LPTA, CLT

Have you ever seen a person with tape covering some part of their body, probably their knee or elbow, and wondered what’s that about? It was most likely a terrific tool in our physical and occupational therapy tool box, kinesiotape.

Kinesio Taping is a method that is applied to the body to help reduce pain and inflammation for various medical conditions. According to Kinesio's website, the method uses a specially designed elastic therapeutic tape known as Kinesio Tex Tape to lift the skin microscopically and aid the body's natural healing process.[1] It is a non-restrictive method that allows for full range of motion and is appropriate for many stages of treatment plans.[2]

Kinesio taping works through various mechanisms of action. The application of Kinesio Tex Tape on the skin with varying degrees of stretch creates a mechanical stimulus that modulates pain responses[3]. The tape gently lifts the layer of skin and attached tissue covering a muscle, allowing for improved movement of blood and other body fluids in and around that muscle[4]. Additionally, Kinesio Taping can help with the drainage of fluid by utilizing a space-lifting mechanism[5].

Kinesio tape can provide support and help with tendon-related issues in several ways. The tape is applied strategically to provide support, reduce pain, and improve function[6]. It can help alleviate symptoms of tendonitis by providing gentle support and promoting proper alignment of the affected tendon[8]. The tape's elasticity allows for comfortable movement while still providing support[9]. It can also help decrease pressure on the tendon and reduce inflammation by lifting the skin and creating space, which may help improve blood flow and lymphatic drainage[7][9]. By reducing pain and inflammation, kinesio tape can potentially enhance the healing process and improve overall function of the affected tendon[6]

Additionally, kinesio tape can help in transferring stress from the tendon to the tape, which may reduce strain on the injured tendon during activities such as running or walking[9]. It can act as a proprioceptive feedback tool, facilitating improved body awareness and providing sensory input to the brain, potentially improving muscle coordination and reducing further strain on the tendon[9][10]

Overall, Kinesio taping aims to enhance the body's natural healing process, reduce pain, promote physiological balance, and provide support and alignment of affected tendon[3] [6][7][9]

Please note that kinesio tape should be applied by a trained professional who can assess your specific condition and provide appropriate guidance.
