Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a swelling that occurs directly underneath the skin that can progress to encompass the entire limb.  It is a thick, protein-rich fluid that can occur from a variety of incidents such as a surgery, after chemo or radiation therapy, age-related changes to the venous system, or even idiopathic cause.  Treatment to reduce the swelling includes education for positional elevation, appropriate hydration and skin care needs as well as an individualized mobility program to encourage the muscles that underlie the area to assist with the reduction of the swelling.  Our physical therapists also specialize in compression decongestive therapy which incorporates manual lymph drainage technique that specifically addresses the accumulation of fluid and assists in the movement of that fluid to a safe reduction size, and a series of compression wrapping or specific compression garment recommendation to maintain the reduced limb size and prevent any further exacerbations.

Our lymphedema specialists also work as a collaborative team with your provider and a compression pump provider if more extensive treatment is needed for home use and for insurance coverage so you or your loved one can get the care they need.

What one local doctor is saying about our Lymphedema Specialists:

Lymphedema is a difficult diagnosis to work with; for patients and care givers. Patient engagement is primary to the success of any lymphedema care program.
The compassion, energy and professionalism shown by the wonderful therapists and support staff at Virginian Rehabilitation & Wellness is the reason so many of my patients engage in properly managing their lymphedema. Patients succeed and feel cared for, their quality of life is improved markedly. As an extension of my practice, I could ask for nothing more.
