Theracycle

Current research has shown that reciprocal, repetitive and high intensity exercise decreases motor symptoms in those with Parkinson’s disease. One intervention that addresses this is the Theracycle, which incorporates the “forced exercise” method. Theracycle was developed to replace the second rider in a tandem bike set up with a motor that ranges in speed and ensures a particular and consistent speed for the participant. This method, along with guidance from our therapists to determine appropriate parameters, can reduce motor symptoms of Parkinson’s by delivering consistent and repetition movement to reinforce the motor coordination and joint mobility that is affected by the condition. Also, more research has recently been published regarding other neuromotor conditions that could benefit from this method, such as Multiple Sclerosis. Our therapists can incorporate this intervention as a part of an individualized program within rehabilitation plan of care or to establish and progress a wellness program to improve quality of life.
