Top Five Reasons to Exercise if You Have Parkinson’s

By: Cathleen Renkiewicz PT, DPT, GCS, CEEAA

Specific exercise programs are recommended by neurologists and movement disorder specialists to help with the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s Disease (PD).  Here is a list, with supportive research, on how exercise can help.

#1 Controls the progression of your symptoms

Exercise is the ONLY means to control progression of symptoms!  Medications help control the symptoms of PD but do NOT affect how PD progresses, according to this 2015 study on the positive effects of intense exercise for those with PD.  The research doesn’t stop there! Here is another study supporting the positive effects of exercise on the disease.

#2 Reduces stiffness and improves posture

Daily movement lubricates the joints and tendons helping keep your muscles ability to move through their full range of motion.  Because of this stiffness, also called rigidity, tight muscles tend to pull posture forward, creating a stooped posture and a tight anterior chest wall.  An appropriate exercise program will focus on movement throughout a full range of motion, having positive effects on stiffness and posture.

#3 Helps your overall mood

PD can affect your mood and increase your risk of feeling depressed due to changes in the chemical balance in your brain.  Just like with ANYONE, PD or not, exercise can positively affect this chemical balance to improve your mood.  Exercise also gives you a measure of control over your PD.

#4 Improves balance and coordination and decrease your risk of falling

Multiple studies support the positive effects of exercise on strength, balance and muscular control. Your balance system can change and improve with exercise just like your muscular strength. A research study from 2014 supports the positive effects of exercise on balance in PD, prevention of falls, and a review of fall risk factors and the role of physical interventions.

#5 Helps reduce fatigue

It seems like the reverse should be true, but exercise decreases the feeling of fatigue common in many neurological disorders, such as PD.  There are many PD specific exercise programs available to people with PD including our own wellness program which has virtual yoga programs, one on one fitness programs and a personal boxing program.
